One of the most frequent questions I get from freshers and early-career professionals at GetJobWithAbu is: "Which certification should I get?" The IT certification market is overwhelming — hundreds of certifications exist, each promising to boost your career. But the truth is, not all certifications deliver equal value. Some are career-changing investments, while others are expensive pieces of paper that recruiters barely notice.
In this guide, I will rank the most relevant certifications for freshers in the Indian IT market based on their actual return on investment — considering cost, difficulty, job market impact, and salary premium.
How I Evaluate Certification ROI
My ROI evaluation considers four factors:
- Job Market Demand — How many job postings mention this certification?
- Salary Premium — How much more can you earn with this certification versus without?
- Cost — Exam fees plus study material costs
- Difficulty and Time Investment — How long does it take to prepare?
Tier 1: High ROI Certifications (Strongly Recommended)
1. AWS Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03)
ROI Score: 9.5/10
- Cost: $150 USD (~₹12,500) for the exam
- Preparation time: 2-3 months with dedicated study
- Salary impact: 25-40% premium over non-certified candidates for cloud-related roles
- Job market: AWS appears in 45%+ of DevOps and cloud job descriptions in India
Why it is the best investment: AWS dominates the cloud market in India, and the Solutions Architect Associate is the most recognized cloud certification. I have seen freshers with this certification receive starting offers 20-30% higher than their uncertified peers. Companies actively filter for AWS-certified candidates on job portals.
Study resources (free/low-cost): AWS Free Tier for hands-on practice, Stephane Maarek's Udemy course (often on sale for ₹449), official AWS training videos on Skill Builder (free).
2. Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)
ROI Score: 9/10
- Cost: $395 USD (~₹33,000) — includes one free retake
- Preparation time: 2-4 months depending on prior experience
- Salary impact: 30-50% premium for DevOps and SRE roles
- Job market: Kubernetes is now a standard requirement for DevOps roles
Why it is worth the investment: The CKA is a hands-on, performance-based exam — no multiple choice. This makes it highly respected by employers because passing it proves you can actually work with Kubernetes, not just memorize concepts. Despite the higher cost, the salary premium and career opportunities make it one of the best investments.
Important tip: The CKA includes a free retake with your exam purchase. Many candidates use the first attempt as a practice run. The exam environment uses a real Kubernetes cluster, so practice extensively with killer.sh (included free with registration).
3. Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) + Azure Administrator (AZ-104)
ROI Score: 8.5/10
- Cost: AZ-900 is $99 USD (~₹8,300), AZ-104 is $165 USD (~₹13,800)
- Preparation time: AZ-900: 2-3 weeks, AZ-104: 2-3 months
- Salary impact: 20-35% premium for Azure-related roles
- Job market: Azure is growing rapidly in India, especially in enterprise and government sectors
Why both matter: AZ-900 alone has limited value — it is a fundamentals cert. But combined with AZ-104 (Administrator), you demonstrate practical Azure skills. Many Indian IT companies (TCS, Wipro, Infosys, HCL) have large Azure practices and actively seek certified professionals.
Tier 2: Good ROI Certifications (Recommended for Specific Paths)
4. HashiCorp Terraform Associate
ROI Score: 8/10
- Cost: $70.50 USD (~₹5,900)
- Preparation time: 4-6 weeks
- Salary impact: 15-25% premium for Infrastructure as Code roles
- Job market: Terraform is the most popular IaC tool, appearing in 30%+ of DevOps job descriptions
Best for: Anyone targeting DevOps or cloud infrastructure roles. Terraform is a must-know tool, and the certification validates your knowledge at an affordable price point.
5. Docker Certified Associate (DCA)
ROI Score: 7.5/10
- Cost: $195 USD (~₹16,300)
- Preparation time: 4-6 weeks
- Salary impact: 15-20% premium
- Job market: Docker is ubiquitous in DevOps, but many employers value hands-on experience over the certification specifically
My honest take: Docker skills are essential, but the Docker certification specifically is less recognized by Indian recruiters compared to AWS or CKA. I recommend learning Docker thoroughly but prioritizing AWS or CKA certification first.
6. Linux Foundation LFCS (Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator)
ROI Score: 7.5/10
- Cost: $395 USD (~₹33,000) — includes one free retake
- Preparation time: 2-3 months
- Salary impact: 15-25% premium for system administration and DevOps roles
- Job market: Linux skills are foundational for IT — this certification validates them formally
Best for: Candidates transitioning from Windows-heavy environments or freshers who want to formally demonstrate Linux expertise.
Tier 3: Moderate ROI Certifications (Consider Based on Career Goals)
7. Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer
ROI Score: 7/10
- Cost: $200 USD (~₹16,700)
- Preparation time: 2-3 months
- Salary impact: 20-30% for GCP-specific roles (limited availability in India)
- Job market: GCP has a smaller market share in India compared to AWS and Azure
My take: Excellent certification if you are targeting Google, companies in the Google Cloud Partner ecosystem, or US-based companies. For the general Indian job market, AWS or Azure certifications offer better ROI.
8. ITIL 4 Foundation
ROI Score: 6.5/10
- Cost: $383 USD (~₹32,000) through an Accredited Training Organization
- Preparation time: 2-3 weeks of focused study
- Salary impact: 10-15% premium for IT service management roles
- Job market: Valued in IT services companies (TCS, Wipro, Infosys) for support and ITSM roles
My honest take: ITIL is useful but has lower ROI than technical certifications. If you are in application support and not planning to move to DevOps, ITIL adds value. Otherwise, invest your time and money in technical certifications.
9. CompTIA Linux+ or CompTIA Security+
ROI Score: 6/10
- Cost: $369 USD (~₹30,800) each
- Preparation time: 2-3 months
- Salary impact: 10-15% premium
- Job market: More recognized in the US market. Indian recruiters prefer vendor-specific certifications (AWS, Azure)
Certifications to Avoid as a Fresher
Based on my experience mentoring candidates, here are certifications I do NOT recommend for freshers:
- AWS Solutions Architect Professional — Too advanced for freshers. Get the Associate first and gain 1-2 years of experience before attempting Professional
- CISSP — Requires 5 years of experience. Irrelevant for freshers
- PMP — Project management certification that requires years of experience. Not relevant for technical freshers
- Random vendor-specific certifications from lesser-known platforms — Recruiters do not recognize them
- Multiple entry-level certifications — Getting 5 "fundamentals" certifications is less valuable than 1 solid intermediate certification
How to Fund Your Certification
Certifications can be expensive, especially for freshers. Here are strategies:
- Company sponsorship — Many IT companies reimburse certification costs. Ask your HR department about learning and development budgets
- AWS/Azure/GCP free training programs — All major cloud providers offer free training events and sometimes free exam vouchers
- Student discounts — Some certification providers offer reduced rates for students
- Sale periods — Udemy courses regularly go on sale for ₹449-599. Never pay full price
- Free tier accounts — All cloud providers offer free tiers for hands-on practice
My Recommended Certification Path for Freshers
Year 1: AWS Solutions Architect Associate (or Azure AZ-104 if targeting Azure-heavy companies)
Year 2: CKA (if targeting DevOps) or Terraform Associate (if targeting infrastructure roles)
Year 3: Specialize — Dynatrace Partner certification, Advanced AWS certifications, or security certifications based on your career direction
Final Thoughts
Certifications are career accelerators, not career substitutes. A certification combined with practical skills and project experience is powerful. A certification alone, without the ability to apply the knowledge in real-world scenarios, has limited value.
My advice: pick ONE certification from Tier 1, invest 2-3 months in focused preparation, pass the exam, and then immediately apply your knowledge in personal projects or at work. The combination of certification + demonstrated skills is what gets you hired and promoted.
